Skyco Plant Lab
The Skyco Plant Lab runs water quality tests daily using state of
the art lab equipment. Each day we run pH, hardness, iron, fluoride, chlorides,
phosphate, chlorine and turbidity. We also run a bacteriological sample on our distributed
water. On Wednesdays, we run these same tests on our raw water. We randomly test our
finished water during the day while we are processing. Once a month we run copper,
manganese and zinc. We send a monthly report to the state containing these test results.
We monitor our discharge water from our softeners to comply with our National Pollutant
Discharge Elimination System Permit. We test this water for pH, residual chlorine, and
settleable matter. We send a sample to a certified state laboratory to test for turbidity,
total iron, total chlorides and total suspended residue. We also send a monthly report to
the state containing these test results.
Lab Equipment
The following is a list of our lab equipment that we use in
our testing.
- Laboratory Fume Hood (Labconco 352702)
- Used during the running of tests which result in
unpleasant odors such as zinc.
Laboratory pH/ISE Meter (Orion Thermo 3 Star)
- This is used for pH measurement. pH
is measured by an electrode and is the measure of hydrogen ion activity in a
solution.
Hach Sension 156
This is used in the field for obtaining pH readings, conductivity, and
dissolved oxygen.
DR/4000 Spectrophotometer
This piece of equipment is capable of doing many different tests. It
is a microprocessor-operated instrument preprogrammed with calibrations for
most water management test requirements.
- Barnstead/Thermolyne Heater (HP46825)
- This is used for tests such as Total Phosphate which has to
be cooked.
Conductivity/TDS Meter (Hach Sension 5)
- This is used for reading conductivity and total dissolved
solids.
Turbidimeter (Hach 2100P)
- This is used for reading turbidity of liquids by passing
light through them and determining how much light is reflected by the
particles in the liquid.
Econo Temp Incubator (Fisher 55 D)
- Used for incubation of Bacteriological samples.
Colorimeter II Test Kit (Hach)
This is used for getting chlorine results in the field. It uses Accu-Vac
ampules with Free Chlorine Reagent in them. Once the sample is collected, it
is tested against a blank or standard of sample being tested. Ammonia and
monochloramines are also tested with this kit.
Sievers 5310C Laboratory TOC Analyzer-
Used to measure TOCs (Total Organic Carbons)
removed by our anion exchange process.
