Cape Hatteras Electric Cooperative Power Update (9/05/2011) |
|
Monday Update (09/05/2011):
Shortly after 4:00 pm Monday, September 05, 2011, just over one week since Hurricane Irene created several breaches and one new inlet on Hatteras Island, CHEC energized the temporarily restored 115kV transmission line. Dominion Power required that the Buxton and Ocracoke diesel generating plants be shut down, so all villages experienced an outage during the transition from diesel to mainland power. CHEC has been in contact with NCDOT to begin making preparations for a permanent restoration of the 115 kV transmission line in conjunction with their plans for a temporary bridge across the inlet. CHEC continues to be concerned about the erosion near our structure at the southern end of the inlet. NCDOT’s plans calls for protective measures at both ends of the bridge, however it will be 2 to 3 weeks before they are able to do so. The current track of Hurricane Katia keeps it well off shore. However, because of the potential for high seas and rough surf, CHEC will continue to ensure that adequate emergency generation resources are available. CHEC will continue to provide updates as new information becomes available. |
