5th Grade Bookmark Contest

The Dare County Soil and Water Conservation District holds an annual 5th Grade Book Mark Contest in the spring. The purpose of the contest is to teach students about the value of our natural resources, with a focus on storm water pollution, and then give them a chance to demonstrate their new knowledge by illustrating a book mark. One of the main goals of the Soil and Water Conservation District is to teach Dare County residents about the importance of clean water. We believe that it is important to create an appreciation for nature and conservation practices in students at an early age.

There is a first, second, and third place winner from each elementary school; there is no overall county winner. The first place winner from each school has their bookmark printed up for every student in their elementary school. Extra bookmarks will be distributed to Dare County Libraries for the public… be sure to keep an eye out for them!

Envirothon

The Envirothon is a competitive event to help prepare and qualify students for the State Envirothon Competition. It is open to high school and middle school students. The Envirothon program is a pre-qualifier competition among five-member teams. Students compete in their knowledge of natural resources. There are five subject areas of study: Soils, Forestry, Wildlife, Aquatics and Current Environmental Issues.

The five-member team takes a written test at each of the five stations and the team with the highest total score wins the competition. The top seven scoring teams advance to the State Envirothon Competition. High school and middle school teams do not compete against each other.

The winning high school team at the State Competition advances to the National Envirothon Competition. The National Envirothon Competition site rotates annually to different locations throughout the United States and Canada.

Competition is open to ecology clubs, Girl Scouts, Boy Scouts, FFA Chapters, 4-H clubs, home study groups, environmental groups, Vo-Ag groups, or others interested in competing.  Team members must be high school or middle school students and from the same school or group.  An advisor is required.

If a teacher is unable to attend the Envirothon a parent may step in as an advisor. Lunch is provided by the Envirothon. There is no cost to enter at the area level. However, the school will need to find transportation for the students.

Resource Conservation Workshop

The Resource Conservation Workshop is a week of intensive study requiring student attention and participation in a wide range of conservation topics. Students are housed in North Carolina State University campus dormitories under the guidance of Live-in counselors. In order to achieve success, students should come prepared to apply themselves to meet the primary objective of this workshop - learning about natural resources and their management in today's environment. Cash awards and scholarships are won and presented to students.

The District sponsors one student from applications of rising sophomores, juniors and seniors who have demonstrated an interest in natural resource conservation. Students may participate only one time in this workshop.
