Youth Activities (ages 5 & up)

Art Classes
Ages: Grades K-5
Cost: $35
Place: Roanoke Island/Mainland Division
When: Winter Season
We’ll paint, draw, sculpt and engrave to create Pop Art projects. We’ll be inspired by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, Jasper Johns and Claes Oldenburg. You’ll create your Warhol self portrait and be prepared to make your favorite food oversized! Class is limited to 8!

Arts & Crafts Classes
Ages: Varies depending on class offered
Cost: Varies depending on class offered
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Various times throughout the year
Participants will make a variety of arts and crafts projects. A variety of materials will be used such as, paints, clay, beads, fabrics, and much more. Please wear appropriate clothing.

Babysitter Course
Ages: 12 & up
Cost: $10.00/participant
Place: Hatteras Division
When: Fall Season
Participants will learn the basic rules and procedures of babysitting. All participants will receive a babysitter’s handbook and be certified in CPR and First Aid for infants, children, and adults upon completion of the course.

Basketball
Ages: 5-18
Cost: $35/$30
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Winter Season
Children will participate in their respective age groups. Practices tentatively begin the first week of December with games starting in January. Coaches are volunteers and will be participating in a coaching certification and clinic.

Boys Strength Training
Ages: 3 & up
Cost: $35/participant
Place: Hatteras
When: Spring and Fall Sessions (10 week session)
Classes will be geared toward muscular strength training and flexibility.

Cookie Decorating Class
Ages: 8-12
Cost: $10/participant
Place: All 3 divisions
When: Various time throughout the year
Participants will bake and decorate Halloween cookies using decorating bags and tips. Each participant needs to bring a container to bring cookies home in.

Cooking Classes
Ages: Boys & girls ages 10 & above
Cost: $40/participant
Place: Hatteras Division
When: Fall Season
Participants will learn how to prepare healthy snacks, appetizers, entrees, desserts, drinks and more. Kids are encouraged to explore their own style and creativity.

Cheerleading
Ages: 8-12
Cost: $40
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Fall Season
Children will cheer in their respective age groups for an assigned football team. Cheerleading outfit will be provided by Parks and Recreation. Practices tentatively begin the last week of August with games beginning in September. Cheerleaders will travel throughout the county for games that are held on Saturdays.

Dodgeball
Ages: 7 & up
Cost: Free
Place: Hatteras Division
When: Spring Season
Participants will meet each week for an hour and play pick-up games of dodgeball. Balls used will be Koosh softies.

Drama
Ages: Grades 6-12
Cost: $40
Place: Northern Beach and Roanoke Island/Mainland Divisions
When: Spring and Fall Seasons
Participants will learn about set design, directing, reading scripts, role play, character traits, and discover their own style of creativity when developing their specific character.

Fitness Classes
Ages: 10-14
Cost: $25/$15
Place: Hatteras Division
When: Spring and Fall Sessions (6 week session)
This will be a general fitness class including active warm ups, muscular strengthening exercises, as well as flexibility exercises. The main focus will be on improving muscular strength and endurance, as well as learning proper technique. A variety of equipment will be used, such as stability balls, medicine balls and dumbbells.

Football

Ages: 5-12
Cost: $35 5-6 year old participants -
$45 7-12 year old participants
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Fall Season
Children will participate in their respective age divisions.
NEW AGE GROUPS *5-6, 7-8 , 9-10 AND 11-12. *AGE 5-6 – PEE-WEE INSTRUCTIONAL LEAGUE, practice twice a week for 1 hr, 6 weeks, no equipment- 2 games played with flags.   AGES 7-12 LEAGUE - Games are played at all three divisions of the Parks and Recreation Dept. All equipment except shoes is provided by Parks and Rec.  Coaches are all volunteers and will be participating in a coaching certification and clinic. Practices tentatively begin the last week of August with games beginning in September. Teams will travel throughout the county for games that are held on Saturdays.

Gymnastics
Ages: 3 & up
Cost: $40
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Spring and Fall sessions (10 week session).
Children will be placed in classes based on their skill level. Classes will involve flexibility, tumbling/floor exercises, balance beam, vaulting, and bars depending on the division location. Recital will be held at end of session.

Holiday Projects
Ages: 10 & up
Cost: $25.00/participant
Place: Hatteras Division
When: Fall/Winter Season
Participants will complete 4-5 projects to include Christmas stockings using a sewing machine, ornaments, quilt squares, Christmas cookies and more.

Music Lessons
Ages: 7-17
Cost: $30/participant
Place: Roanoke Island Division
When: Fall and Spring Seasons
Participants are taught basics of reading and playing music using a varity of musical instruments. Classes are taught by Manteo High School music students. There will be a recital at the end of each session.

Science Classes
Ages: Grades 1-5
Cost: $30/participant
Place: Roanoke Island/Mainland and Northern Beach Divisions
When: Winter Season
We’ll generate a hypothesis for each class and conduct experiments to make silly putty, write secret messages with a polymer, invent our own bouncing balls and use recycled products to create our own plastic shrinking polymer designs. We’ll also experiment with natural polymer substances such as jell-o and gummy bears. Limited to 8!

Sign Language Classes
Ages: 5 & up
Cost: $10.00/participant
Place: Roanoke Island/Mainland Division
When: Spring and Fall Sessions (6 week session)
All participants will learn basic sign language, how to communicate with Deaf people, learn about Deaf culture and famous Deaf people. Each child is asked to bring a 3-ring binder to class.

Soccer
Ages 5-15
Cost: $35/$30
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Fall Season
Children will participate in their respective age groups. Coaches are all volunteers and will be participating in a coaching certification and clinic. Children will progress at their own pace, and they will be taught skills to help them progress. Children must provide their own shoes and shin guards. Coaches are all volunteers and will be participating in a coaching certification and clinic. Practices are tentatively scheduled to begin the last week of August with games beginning in September.

Tee Ball
Ages: 4-6
Cost: $30
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Spring Season
Participants will learn the basic skills used in baseball and softball such as throwing, catching, batting, and properly running the bases. All coaches are all volunteers and will be participating in a coaching certification and clinic. Practices and games tentatively begin in April.

Trips
Ages: Varies depending on the trip
Cost: Varies depending on the trip
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Various times throughout the year
Trips include Ice Skating, Roller Skating, Circus, Museums, Disney on Ice, Putt Putt Golf, and more. Please check current activities link in your division for specific dates, times, and fees.

Volleyball
Ages: 7-12
Cost: $30/$20
Place: Hatteras Division
When: Spring
Volleyball is open to boys and girls 7–12 years old. Participants will learn the basic fundamentals and skills such as, setting, spiking, volleying, and serving.

Wrestling
Ages: 7 & up
Cost: $35
Place: All 3 Divisions
When: Winter Season
Participants will learn the basic fundamentals and skills such as clinching, holding, locking, leverage, and pinning. Wrestling matches will be held in all three divisions and participants will be provided transportation and be required to attend all practices and matches. Coaches are all volunteers and will be participating in a coaching certification and clinic.
