Community Meeting on UNC Cancer Care Initiative for
Dare County
The University of North Carolina Cancer Care Initiative for Dare
County will be the topic of a Community Meeting on Thursday, October 2
beginning at 7 p.m. in the Roanoke Community Center (Head Start
Building) in Manteo.
``We have asked representatives from the UNC Lineberger Comprehensive
Cancer Center of the North Carolina Cancer Hospital to explain the
services that are available to our community through this program
partnership which began in June,’’ commented Dare County Commissioner
Virginia Tillett. ``We have heard so many wonderful comments from people
who have been served by the program that we want to be sure all our
residents know that the program is here to help them and their families
should the need arise.’’
Commissioner Tillett will serve as the master of ceremonies for the
meeting which will introduce Jean Sellers of UNC’s Clinical Cancer
Services and the Initiative’s two Patient Navigators, Lynn Mills and
Nancy Easterday. Dare Commission Chair Warren Judge will be on hand to
discuss the history of the program.
The two Outreach Nurse Navigators are based in Dare County and work full
time with people diagnosed with cancer and their families helping them
find the best ways to progress through the medical, financial and
transportation obstacles that may arise during the treatment period.
Sellers works out of Chapel Hill visiting Dare County frequently to
coordinate the schedule of patient consultations for cancer physicians
who work in Dare on alternating Fridays.
The Community Meeting is open to all residents of Dare County and is
free. The Roanoke Community Center is located at the intersection of Sir
Walter Raleigh Street and Bideford Street in Manteo. Light refreshments
will be served and the meeting will conclude with a Question and Answer
session.
